Gr 12 Passport

Passport?

SO...if you have done the grade 11 course with me you know all about this, and if I am doing my job even remotely well, by the time you have reached this point you should know that the College level English courses are all "skills based, not text based". This means that to be successful in the course you need to master and demonstrate a certain selection of school skills. This is really what your high school English course is for. So here's a little more about that.

1. The List - AKA The Grade 12 Passport

The link above should take you to the actual list of 17 tasks you need to be able to do. If it doesnt take you there, let me know.

2. Where did the list come from?

This is a good question, because it helps describe the list. Essentially, I went to Mohawk (and a few other colleges) and asked them. What tasks will students have to perform when they get to college, and more importantly, what do they generally do poorly. THEY gave me this list. So, if you want to go to college, and if you want to do well when you get there (why else pay the money?) then let's just focus on these 17 core skills.

So essentially, if you can do these things, you will earn a strong mark in an ENG4C - AND you will do well in your college career.

3. How can I learn how to get better at these skills?

Another good question, maybe the most important question. The easiest way to answer this is, simply, me. I am your teacher, it is my job to explain how to do these things, to TEACH you (if you will) how to do these things. So that's the easiest way to explain that.

More specifically, there are a few ways. I hope to generate a series of rubrics for each of these tasks that will explain to you exactly what I am looking for. The marking scheme/rubric should generally be one of the first places to look when given a new assignment, no matter what level of school you're at, especially when you're paying for it. That's your starting point. If you scroll down, hopefully you will find rubrics for the major products on the passport.

Also, I am working to develop a series of mini-lessons that will help you figure out how to get these tasks right when I am not around or when you are unable to make it in. It will never be as good as you and I working together, but it will work in a pinch. Go to the English Skills page on this BLOG to find those mini lessons.

OK? OK.
